Built between 1920 and 1930, the heritage-listed Brisbane City Hall is seen as the heart of Brisbane and has been the backdrop to many cultural, social and civic events.

City Hall is the civic seat of the city and is home to the Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor. It also plays host to community and corporate events each day. Unlike a heritage home, it is a busy and active working building, so you may find that some of the rooms and features are not open to the public on certain days. Accompanied by a professional guide, these tours provide further access to different parts of the building as possible.

Tours are limited to 20 people per tour and may reach capacity early. Please arrive early to join your tour. Tours depart from the King George Square foyer. For bookings over 10 people, please contact the Museum’s Visitor Experience Coordinator on 07 3339 0845.

Light of Christmas - Sydney

Visit St Mary’s Cathedral for a stunning display of Christmas lights this December

Maybe it’s cold outside elsewhere, but here in Sydney the weather is just warming up, and that means it’s the perfect time of year to get out of the house and enjoy some Christmas lights. Now we’re not talking about the dodgy string of fairy lights your next-door neighbour has used to rim their veranda for the past six years—the one where every other bulb’s blown and half of the remaining ones flicker. No. We mean something a little more spectacular.

Christmas will once again take over St Mary’s Cathedral’s façade with a show of music, dancing lights and projections. From Wednesday December 5 to Tuesday December 25 the cathedral will be alight with vivid Christmas projections. The display will start at 7:30pm and go on until midnight each night.

The festivities will also feature a number of different choirs each evening, followed by the lights at 8.30pm. The show itself is separated into three segments: a Christmas-inspired, kaleidoscopic feast of light and colour, a story written and narrated by actor and writer Simon Pryce (AKA the Red Wiggle), and finally a collection of artworks of the Madonna and Child. Best of all it’s free!

So pack a picnic or bring some money and enjoy the variety of delicious food available. There’ll be churros, coffee, gelato, and a range of great savoury options for you to nibble on while you take in the displays.

Festival of the Winds 2018

On Sunday September 9 the Festival of the Winds will return to Bondi Beach for its 40th year. Since starting in 1978 thanks to a group of eager wind energy champions, the event has grown into Australia’s largest kite-flying festival with more than 40,000 people hitting the sands to see all the sky-high action.

For one day only, kites will carve through the skies over Bondi, while surfers carve through the waves below. To celebrate the festival’s 40th year, a special program has been announced featuring entertainment, food stalls, gallery exhibitions, workshops for adults and children plus the chance to make your very own kite.

To be clear for anyone unfamiliar with the festival: these aren’t your average diamond-shaped kites. The Festival of the Winds brings together a wild mix of floating and flying kites ranging from giant sea creatures to massive abstract objects and swirling rainbow creations.

The highlight of the free festival are of course the professional kite-flying performances, with expert kite fliers demonstrating their skills in the air. The Festival of the Winds isn’t just for professionals however – passionate kite fliers and fans of all skill levels make their way to the beach to take part every year, with many adults who grew up with the festival now bringing their own kids.

To see the amazing kites soar above the sand and sea, make your way to Bondi Beach between 11am and 4pm on Sunday September 9.

You’ll need to plan ahead as trains won’t be running between Bondi Junction and Central, but plenty of extra buses will run – plan your trip at transportnsw.info.

13th Sydney Latin American Film Festival 2018
Sep
6
to Sep 15

13th Sydney Latin American Film Festival 2018

The Sydney Latin American Film Festival has been the cornerstone for Latin American cinema and culture in Sydney since 2006.  We are a not for profit organisation and funds raised from tickets sales are injected into social justice, environmental and community development organisations in Latin America and Australia. Over the past 12 years, our Community Support Program has raised more than $120,000. We could not have done this without our numerous volunteers, supporters, collaborators and sponsors, whose passion for promoting Latin American cinema and culture has enriched many lives.

The SLAFF committee and crew are passionate, span generations and each represent different geographical regions of Latin America, bringing an array of ideas and experiences from a Latin American perspective. This diversity is priceless and represented in our year-round programming.

We live and breathe Latin American film and culture. We live in your community and will bring you the best films and events with the broadest spectrum throughout the year.

But we still have a lot of work to do. Even in a multicultural city like Sydney, stereotypes abound about being Latino/a. The Sydney Latin American Film Festival has a responsibility to represent the diversity of stories, cultures and voices coming from the vast Latin American continent. We aim to achieve this through a deeply considered selection of feature films, documentaries and shorts that further the understanding and appreciation of Latin America.
